What is a Temazcal Ceremony?

Wellness - Temazcal - Shaman

You may have seen the word Temazcal when looking through the AMResorts fantastic list of inclusions. But what is it?!

In ancient times the people indigenous to Mesoamerica used the temazcal ceremony as a curative ritual thought to purify the body after exertion. It was also used for healing in general in times of sickness, during child birth or even to cleanse the mind in preparation for making a big decision.

The ceremony takes place in a hut and volcanic stones are used to warm the area, making it both smoky and sweaty! It is led by an Intercessor, or healer, and is one hour long. The ritual will begin with a blessing from the Intercessor, and one by one, participants will enter the Temazcal structure, sitting in a circle for the healing ceremony. The shelter will be filled with hot stones and the Intercessor will guide participants through the spiritual ritual, involving aromas, herbal steams, sounds and sensations.

After the Temazcal ceremony has come to an end and you step back into the light you will feel refreshed. Participants claim to have varied results with some feeling more in tune with the environment, renewed energy and a clear mind.

The best way to find out what it does for you, is to try for yourself!
